The Dark Horse Story
Our story started at 17th Street BBQ in America.
Champion pitmaster Mike Miles presides over his seven nationally acclaimed barbecue restaurants—in Southern Illinois and Las Vegas; when our team visited in August 2015 they were gob-smacked, this was real Authentic American BBQ and the only way to bring this to Birmingham was to learn from these guys!
Following our visit, our team travelled around America, resulting in Keith Marsden (owner) and his son Will joining the Pit Crew to take part in ‘Praise the Lard’ – 17th Street’s TV series which sees a number of restauranteurs taking on their famous smoker!
From here we developed our smokehouse – our brisket is lovingly rubbed with a blend of spices to enhance its flavour profile, then smoked low & slow over hickory to make it the tender, flavoursome and juicy. Our hand-made burgers are made using the finest quality steak, minced chuck and blade to get the fat content, just right – there is nothing else added, apart from salt and pepper. Our Sunday roasts are a big affair, we slow cook our beef overnight so that the meat is perfectly tender the next day and the pulled pork is truly unique – all served with seasonal veg! We also have a great range of pizzas – made in house, cooked in our pizza over and in full view of our diners in the restaurant.
At the Dark Horse we are truly passionate about craft beer. We wanted to create a bar in Birmingham that we’d want to drink in, where we can get excited about the range of beers, and a bar where people who share our passion can come and enjoy some of the best Craft Beers from around the world. With some regular favourites and a number of rotating guests, our 17 taps offer an exciting selection of draught beer from the best breweries we can find.
Our beer experts have travelled the globe from London to Oregon to ensure the highest level of product knowledge on beer. From this global beer experience we have made sure what we put on our taps have been carefully considered to enable the highest quality Craft Beers.
At the Dark Horse you’ll see beer from New Zealand in the from of Yeastie Boys and Monteith’s, beer from USA such as Brooklyn, Lagunitas and Firestone Walker. Along with a wide range of European breweries including; Affligem, Krusovice and Veltins. When it comes to British breweries we like to push a combination of more established Craft Beer breweries such as Purity, Beavertown, Thornbridge and Wild Beer along with newly established micro-breweries. For instance, Deya, Wiper and True, Cloudwater, Pig and Porter, Mad Hatter, Bad Seed – and many, many more! We also cater to the cask beer lovers out there with our two cask lines, where you’ll find Oakham’s Citra and Purity UBU as regulars.
As you can see we have a vast pool of all different forms of beer at the Dark Horse and it’s because we’re damn passionate about good beer, and we want to share this passion with you!
